Carmen is a passionate artist. Her creativity started to flourish when she was still living in her natal Peru in South America. Carmen shares her beginnings with enthusiasm and energy as if it had been only yesterday. Decorating is something she has enjoyed since she can remember and this is why she began to make cakes for her own children. Every time they had a birthday party or a family celebration, Carmen was in charge of the cake. Years passed by and Carmen discovered this was her call. In 1985, she decided to seize her dreams and become more serious about them, so she enrolled in many classes, beginning with the more basic ones. She spent two years studying with her dear professor Amalia in Lima. Like many dreams, this all started as a hobby that revealed an authentic life passion.

In 2001, Carmen and her husband moved to Northern California, following their two grown children. Her creativity encountered a different challenge now: discovering the preferences of consumers in the United States. “Cakes by Design” was officially created in 2008 with a clear goal: to offer original, creative and delicious cakes for all sorts of celebrations in the San Francisco Bay Area. Carmen is a proud graduate of “Steps by Steps” ; a program ran by Women´s Initiative.
